It is my belief that if honest, nonpartisan trials were held today, most members of Congress would be found guilty of either corruption, treason or both. Bold words? Perhaps, but consider the facts: Our government no longer serves the will of the people. Its minions, those senators and representatives bribed with campaign money and junkets, serve instead the will of the giant corporations. They send our soldiers into Iraq to die for the coffers of Halliburton even as they withhold military armor and equipment. They lie about the cause of the war while intimidating and bribing the media into silence. The stuffed shirts on Capitol Hill exploit the workers, shifting the tax burden onto them and away from the rich. They dismantle welfare for the poor and the needy; yet corporate welfare thrives. They strike at our precious freedoms, dismantle our democracy, rig votes during our elections and, most egregiously-via the North American Free Trade Agreement and the World Trade Organization-they allow foreign governments to dictate U.S. law. I call that treason. To the political left, I say it's time to look at the big picture. Forget the antiwar protests. Put aside your marches for the poor and the downtrodden. Abandon your screeds about human rights and the environment. Go for the jugular instead, by marching in every village and hamlet, every town and every city, demanding that a nationwide citizens jury be convened with the intention of putting Congress on trial for crimes against the people. Anything less than that is a waste of time.
