WHAT MORAL VALUES?

Since the election — if that's really what it was — media pundits have been telling us that "moral values" put George W. Bush over the top. To which I say: Bullshit!

Where were moral values when Donald Rumsfeld signed off on the use of torture at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo? Is torturing people a moral thing to do? And where were the moral values of this administration when it lied to the American people about why we were going to war with Iraq? There were no weapons of mass destruction in that country and no ties to al Qaeda either.

Is lying about why more than a thousand Americans have lost their lives-not to mention the 100,000 Iraqi men, women and children who have perished-a sign of moral values? Or is it only the unborn who have the right to life? And if we're going to insist that abortion is immoral, shouldn't we make sure that children are cared for after they're born, rather than defund their health care and social safety net?

I could go on, but I think the point is made: Waving a cross and yelling the name of God or Jesus does not make a person moral. A person's morality should be judged solely through his actions. Based on Bush's actions, I'd say the President has no solid claim to moral values.
