The country’s major networks—ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX—have benefited handsomely from the media deregulation instituted by President Bill Clinton and pushed forward by his successor, George W. Bush. They all know where their bread is buttered. As for the politicians, well, it’s more of the same. They’ve been bought and paid for by Big Business, which has created, in effect, a one-party system that nicely serves their interests. Although the Republican Party has blatantly strived to dismantle the democracy our forebears gave us, Democrats have provided plenty of help. Both parties have foisted a vicious pro-corporate agenda on the American people, one that endangers not only our cherished civil liberties and environment, but also the entire human race. Now we Americans stand at a crossroads. Unless the people rise up to make their voices heard, we will preside over the dimming of a shining beacon that once signaled the most vibrant democracy on the planet—no matter who sits in the White House. The time has come to send, in a single voice, a clear message to the politicians and their corporate masters. To paraphrase the news anchorman portrayed in 1976’s multi-Oscar-winning film Network: “We’re as mad as hell, and we aren’t going to take this anymore!” Larry Flynt Publisher, HUSTLER Magazine ![]() |
